Carpet Stretching Melbourne

Those Ripples Are a Trip Hazard

Waves and bubbles in a carpet are not just ugly. Every time someone walks over a ripple the backing flexes and the fibre wears at that line, so a carpet left rippling develops permanent creases that no amount of stretching will remove.

Ripples happen because the carpet was originally kick-stretched instead of power-stretched, because humidity has moved it, or because heavy furniture has been dragged across it. The fix is the same: lift the edges, pull the slack out properly with a power stretcher, re-hook it onto the gripper and trim the excess.

Done correctly it stays flat. A carpet that has been kicked back into place rather than power-stretched will usually ripple again within a year.

Is it worth doing now?

Yes, and sooner is cheaper. Ripples that have been walked on for years leave a crease line that stays faintly visible even after a perfect stretch. Send a photo and we will tell you what to expect.

What You Get

What Is Included in Every Clean

Every job runs the full process. There is no stripped-back version at a lower price that skips the steps that matter.

Inspection and cause checkRipples caused by a failing underlay or a damp subfloor need that fixed first, and we will say so.
Furniture movedWe move the light furniture ourselves and work around the heavy pieces.
Edges lifted cleanlyCarpet released from the gripper without tearing the backing, which is what cheap jobs get wrong.
Power stretchingA proper power stretcher, not a knee kicker, which is the only way to get the slack out and keep it out.
Re-hooked to gripperThe carpet is re-secured onto the gripper rod so it holds the tension.
Excess trimmedSurplus carpet cut away and tucked so the edge sits flat against the skirting.
Final walk and groomWe walk the room with you so you can see it is flat before we pack up.
Power Stretch vs Knee Kick

Why Cheap Restretching Ripples Again

This is the single biggest difference between a stretch that lasts and one that does not.

Power stretching
Knee kicker only
Tension achieved
Full, even tension across the room
Localised and uneven
How long it lasts
Years, often the life of the carpet
Frequently ripples again within a year
Risk to the backing
Load spread across the width
Concentrated force can split the backing
Suitable for large rooms
Yes, that is what it is designed for
Cannot reach the middle of a big room
Time on site
Slower, more setup
Faster
Cost
Slightly more
Cheaper up front, twice if it fails
Short version: if a quote seems unusually cheap for restretching, ask whether they are power-stretching or just kicking it back. The second one is why so many people have had carpet restretched twice.
Our Process

How We Clean, Step by Step

Most single rooms take one to two hours including moving furniture.

1

Send a photo or describe it

Tell us the rooms affected and how bad the ripples are. You get a fixed price before we book.

2

Check the cause

Damp subfloor or failed underlay has to be dealt with first, or the ripples come straight back.

3

Move and protect furniture

Light items moved by us, heavy items worked around.

4

Release the edges

Carpet lifted off the gripper cleanly, without tearing the backing.

5

Power stretch

Slack pulled out evenly across the full width with a power stretcher.

6

Re-hook, trim and groom

Re-secured to the gripper, excess trimmed, edges tucked and the pile groomed.

When to Book

Signs Your Carpet Needs Restretching

Visible waves or ripplesUsually running across the room. They will get worse and eventually crease permanently.
Bubbles that move underfootA sure sign the carpet has lost its tension and is no longer hooked properly.
It is becoming a trip hazardRaised ridges catch toes and vacuum heads. In a rental this is a genuine liability.
It was kick-stretched originallyVery common in project homes. It often shows up within the first two years.
Heavy furniture has been draggedDragging a lounge or bed across carpet pulls it off the gripper.
After a humid summerMelbourne humidity swells carpet backing. Some carpets ripple seasonally until stretched properly.

Areas We Restretch

Some layouts are simply harder than others, which is what the price reflects.

Bedrooms
Standard roomsThe most straightforward job, usually under an hour once furniture is clear.
Living areas
Large open roomsNeeds a power stretcher to reach the centre. This is where knee-kick jobs fail.
Hallways
Long narrow runsRipples show badly in a hallway because of the light. Priced as a small area.
Stairs
Flights and landingsHand-stretched and re-secured tread by tread. Slower and priced per flight.
Around fixtures
Wardrobes, heatersWorking around built-ins takes longer but avoids dismantling anything.
Whole homes

Problems We Correct

Tell us how long the ripples have been there. Recent movement stretches out completely, while years of walking on a ridge can leave a faint crease line.

Common Questions

Carpet Stretching Melbourne FAQs

How much does carpet restretching cost in Melbourne?

Bedrooms start from $130 and living rooms from $160, with hallways from $90 and stairs from $150 a flight. A whole three-bedroom home is from $420. There is a $130 minimum call-out. You get a fixed itemised quote before we start.

Why did my carpet ripple in the first place?

Almost always because it was kick-stretched instead of power-stretched when it was laid, which is very common in project homes. Humidity, a damp subfloor and dragging heavy furniture are the other causes. We check which it is, because a damp subfloor will ripple the carpet again no matter how well we stretch it.

Will the ripples come back?

Not if it is power-stretched properly and the underlying cause is dealt with. A carpet that is simply kicked back into place usually ripples again within a year, which is why some people have had it done twice.

Do I need to move the furniture?

Clear small items and anything breakable. We move light furniture such as chairs, coffee tables and lounges ourselves. Very heavy items like wardrobes and pianos we work around.

How long does it take?

A standard bedroom is usually under an hour. A large living room takes one to two hours, and a whole three-bedroom house is generally a half day.

Can you stretch and clean in the same visit?

Yes, and it saves a call-out. We always stretch first and clean afterwards so the pile is groomed once the carpet is flat.

Will the crease line disappear completely?

Usually. Where a ripple has been walked over for years the backing can be permanently creased, and a faint line may remain even after a perfect stretch. We will tell you on arrival if that is likely rather than promising a result we cannot deliver.

Can you stretch carpet on stairs?

Yes. Stairs are hand-stretched and re-secured tread by tread, which is slower than a flat room, so they are priced per flight.

What if the gripper has failed?

Then stretching alone will not hold. We replace the gripper rod where needed, priced from $40 a metre, and re-hook the carpet onto the new gripper.

Do you cover my suburb?

All of Melbourne metro plus Geelong and surrounds. Call 0436 389 114 if you are unsure.
