Rug Cleaning Melbourne

A Rug Is Not Just Small Carpet

Rugs are woven and dyed differently to fitted carpet, and many are not colourfast. Cleaning a wool or silk rug with the same heat and chemistry you would use on synthetic broadloom is how rugs end up bleeding, browning or shrinking.

We test dye stability on every rug before any solution touches it. If the dyes move on the test patch, the method changes to a low-moisture, pH-neutral process, and we tell you what result is realistic before we start.

Rugs also hold far more dry soil than people expect, because both sides are exposed. A thorough dry pass on both faces comes before anything wet, and it is usually where most of the dirt actually comes out.

Valuable or antique rug?

Tell us the fibre and roughly where it came from when you request a quote. Hand-knotted, silk and antique pieces are handled differently, and some are better off not being wet-cleaned at all.

What You Get

What Is Included in Every Clean

Every job runs the full process. There is no stripped-back version at a lower price that skips the steps that matter.

Fibre identificationWool, silk, viscose, cotton or synthetic each need a different process, and viscose is the fragile one.
Dye-stability testA hidden section is tested before any solution is applied to the rug itself.
Both-sides dry passRugs trap soil on both faces. This is where most of the dirt is removed.
Fringe assessmentFringes are cotton and yellow easily. They are treated separately and gently.
Fibre-matched cleaningpH-neutral and lower temperature for wool and silk, full extraction for synthetics.
Colour-safe rinseA controlled rinse that lifts residue without carrying dye between colours.
Controlled dryingDried flat with air movement so the backing does not stay damp and the rug does not distort.
On-site vs Workshop

Should Your Rug Be Cleaned at Home or Taken Away?

Most rugs are fine on site. Some genuinely are not, and we will tell you which yours is.

Cleaned on site
Taken to a workshop
Turnaround
Same visit, back in use that day
Days to weeks away
Cost
Lower, no transport or storage
Higher
Best for wool and synthetic rugs
Yes, the large majority
Not usually necessary
Heavy pet contamination
Limited, urine in the backing needs immersion
Full immersion possible
Antique, silk and hand-knotted
Low-moisture surface clean only
Correct place for full restoration
Risk of over-wetting the floor
Managed with backing protection and drying
Not applicable
Short version: if it is a wool or synthetic rug with normal household soiling, on-site cleaning is the sensible choice. If it is a valuable hand-knotted or silk piece, or a dog has repeatedly used it, we will tell you honestly that immersion cleaning elsewhere will get a better result.
Our Process

How We Clean, Step by Step

Most rugs take 30 to 60 minutes on site, then a few hours to dry.

1

Tell us the size and fibre

Even a rough description helps. You get a fixed price before we book.

2

Fibre check and dye test

We identify the fibre and test dye stability on a hidden section first.

3

Both-sides dry pass

Soil vacuumed from both faces before any moisture is introduced.

4

Pre-treat problem areas

Spots, traffic lanes and pet areas treated individually with the right chemistry.

5

Fibre-matched clean

Full extraction for synthetics, low-moisture and pH-neutral for wool, silk and viscose.

6

Rinse, groom and dry flat

Colour-safe rinse, pile groomed in one direction, dried flat with air movement.

When to Book

Signs Your Rug Needs Cleaning

It has been over a yearRugs sit in the highest traffic parts of the room. Annual cleaning is the realistic cycle.
Traffic paths look darkerGrit ground into the pile cuts the fibre. Left alone it wears a permanent path.
Allergies worse in that roomRugs trap dust mites and dander and release it when walked on.
A smell when the heating is onWarm air lifts odour out of the backing. Usually pet or spill related.
It feels stiff or crunchyResidue from a previous clean or a supermarket spray, which needs rinsing out.
Colours look dull and flatOften just soil sitting on the fibre. Many rugs come back surprisingly bright.

Rug Types We Clean

The fibre decides the method entirely. This is the part cheap operators skip, and it is why rugs get ruined.

Wool
Most quality rugsLower temperature, pH-neutral chemistry so the wool does not felt, shrink or brown.
Synthetic
Polypropylene, nylonThe most forgiving. Handles full extraction and comes up dramatically well.
Silk
Fine and antique piecesLow-moisture only, handled as a delicate. Some are better cleaned by immersion elsewhere.
Viscose & bamboo silk
Very common, very fragileTurns yellow and stiffens if over-wetted. Low-moisture only, always.
Cotton & flatweave
Kilims, dhurriesProne to dye bleed and shrinkage, so tested carefully and dried flat.
Shag & high pile
Deep pile rugsExtra dry passes and slower drying. Same approach as deep pile carpet.

Rug Stains We Treat

Tell us what happened and how long ago. On rugs, speed matters more than on carpet because dyes and spills interact in the weave.

Common Questions

Rug Cleaning Melbourne FAQs

How much does rug cleaning cost in Melbourne?

Small rugs start from $89, medium from $129 and large from $169, with a $120 minimum call-out covering up to three rugs at one address. Wool and hand-knotted rugs carry a surcharge from $30 because the process is slower, and silk or viscose from $60. You get a fixed itemised quote before we begin.

Will the colours run?

We test dye stability on a hidden section of every rug before any solution touches the visible pile. If the dyes move, we switch to a low-moisture, pH-neutral method and tell you what result is realistic. Skipping that test is how rugs get ruined, and it is the main reason we will occasionally recommend not wet-cleaning a rug at all.

Can you clean my rug at home?

Almost always, yes. We protect the floor underneath, clean on site and dry with air movement. The exceptions are valuable hand-knotted or silk rugs and rugs with heavy pet urine contamination in the backing, which genuinely get a better result from immersion cleaning elsewhere.

Is viscose safe to clean?

Viscose, sometimes sold as bamboo silk or art silk, is the most fragile fibre we deal with. It yellows, stiffens and marks permanently if over-wetted. We only ever use a low-moisture method on it, and we will set expectations honestly before starting.

How long does a rug take to dry?

Four to six hours for most wool and synthetic rugs, dried flat with air movement. Low-moisture cleans on silk and viscose are faster. We ask you to keep furniture and pets off it until it is fully dry.

Can you get pet urine out of a rug?

Surface accidents, usually yes, using an enzyme treatment that breaks down the salts causing the smell. Urine that has soaked through into the backing and the floor beneath is much harder on site, and repeated accidents in one spot often need immersion cleaning to fully resolve.

Do you clean the fringes?

Yes, separately. Fringes are cotton and yellow easily, so they are treated gently rather than blasted with the same process as the pile. Fringe detailing is from $25.

How often should rugs be cleaned?

Every 12 months for a rug in a living area, or every 6 months with pets or young children. Rugs sit in the busiest part of a room, so they soil faster than the fitted carpet around them.

Can you clean a rug on carpet?

Yes. We place a barrier underneath so moisture does not transfer into the carpet below, and we dry the rug with air movement. If the carpet underneath needs doing too, it is cheaper to book both in the same visit.

Do you cover my suburb?

All of Melbourne metro plus Geelong and surrounds. Call 0436 389 114 if you are unsure.
