How long does it take?
One and a half to three hours for an average home, depending on vent count and condition. If someone quotes you twenty minutes for a whole house, they are cleaning the vent covers and not much else.
Do you clean the return air?
Yes, always. It is the most contaminated part of the system because all the air is drawn back through it, and it is the component most often skipped by cheaper operators. It is worth asking any quote whether it is included.
Will it help my allergies?
It often helps noticeably where symptoms are worse when the heating is running, because the system stops circulating settled dust, pet dander and pollen through every room. It is not a cure for allergies, and if the carpets and mattresses are also untreated they remain a reservoir.
How often should ducts be cleaned?
Every three to five years for most Melbourne homes. Sooner if you have pets, someone with asthma, or you have recently renovated, because construction dust goes straight into the ducting.
Do I get proof it was actually done?

Yes, from $220. The layout and access are different to gas ducted heating, so it is priced separately.
