Duct Repairs Melbourne

If One Room Never Warms Up, the Duct Is Usually the Reason

The heater is rarely the problem. In most Melbourne homes with a complaint about one cold room, the flexible duct feeding that vent has come off the plenum, split along a seam, been crushed by storage in the roof, or been chewed open by rodents.

A disconnected duct does not just stop heating that room. It pumps your heated air straight into the roof space, so every other room gets less as well and the unit runs longer trying to reach the thermostat. People pay for that on the gas bill for years without ever going up the manhole.

This page is about repairing and replacing the ductwork itself. If your ducts are intact and you want the dust and debris removed from them, that is a different job and it is covered on our duct cleaning page.

How do I know which one I need?

If airflow is weak or absent from one or two vents, it is a repair. If airflow is fine everywhere but you get dust and a smell when the heater starts, it is a clean. We inspect first and tell you which, and plenty of callouts turn out to be a single reconnection.

What You Get

What Is Included in Every Clean

Every job runs the full process. There is no stripped-back version at a lower price that skips the steps that matter.

Full roof-space inspectionEvery duct run traced from the plenum to the vent, not just the one you complained about.
Photo evidence before and afterYou see the split, the disconnection or the crush damage yourself. No trust required.
Reconnection to plenum and ventsThe single most common fault, and often the entire fix.
Seam and tear repairFoil-backed duct tape is not a repair. Proper sealing tape and clamps rated for the job.
Duct replacement where neededR1.5 or R2.0 insulated flexible duct, sized correctly for the run rather than whatever is on the van.
Vent and register refittingCeiling and floor registers reseated properly so they stop rattling and leaking.
Airflow check at every ventWe confirm the fix at each outlet before we leave, and show you the difference.
Repair vs Replace

Do You Need a Repair or New Ducting?

The honest split, so you know what to expect before anyone is in your roof.

Repair is enough
Replacement is the answer
Duct off the plenum
Reconnect and clamp
Not needed
One clean split in the outer skin
Sealed properly and clamped
Not needed
Crushed by roof storage
Sometimes reshaped
Usually replaced, the liner is kinked
Rodent damage
Small holes patched
Chewed runs get replaced
Inner liner torn but outer intact
Cannot be sealed from outside
Replace the run
Brittle ducting over 15 years old
Repairs keep failing next to the patch
Replace, it is false economy otherwise
Short version: if the damage is a connection or a clean tear in the outer skin, repair it. If the inner liner is compromised or the material has gone brittle with age, replacing that run is cheaper than repairing it twice.
Our Process

How We Clean, Step by Step

A straightforward reconnection is usually done inside an hour.

1

Tell us the symptoms

Which rooms are weak or cold, and how old the system is. That usually narrows it before we arrive.

2

Inspect the roof space

Every run traced from the plenum out. We photograph anything we find.

3

Show you the problem

You see the photos and get a fixed price for the fix before we start work.

4

Repair or replace

Reconnection, sealing and clamping, or a new insulated run where the liner is gone.

5

Reseat the vents

Ceiling and floor registers refitted and sealed so they stop leaking and rattling.

6

Test every outlet

Airflow checked at each vent with you there, plus after photos of the completed work.

When to Book

Signs Your Ducting Is Damaged

One room never gets warmThe classic symptom of a duct that has come off its plenum take-off.
Gas bill climbing every winterHeated air escaping into the roof means the unit runs far longer for the same result.
Weak airflow from every ventPoints at a leaking plenum rather than one bad run.
Dust blowing out when it startsA torn liner draws in roof-space dust and delivers it into the room.
Rattling or whistling ventsRegisters that have worked loose from the duct behind them.
Rodents heard in the roofFlexible ducting is soft and warm, and it is the first thing they open up.

Common Questions

Duct Repairs and Replacement Melbourne FAQs

How much do duct repairs cost in Melbourne?

From $89 for a reconnection, from $99 to seal a split, from $189 to replace a single insulated run and from $60 per ceiling vent refit. A full eight-outlet re-duct starts from $1,650 after inspection. Inspection is from $89 and we waive it if you go ahead with the repair on the day. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

How is this different from your duct cleaning page?

Cleaning removes dust and debris from ducting that is intact. This page is about ducting that is physically damaged, disconnected, crushed or chewed. If airflow is weak or missing from a vent, you need a repair. If airflow is fine but you get dust and a smell when the heater kicks in, you need a clean.

Why does one room never heat up?

Nine times out of ten the flexible duct feeding that vent has come off the plenum at the heater end, or split along a seam. Your heated air is going into the roof space rather than the room. It is usually a reconnection, which is the cheapest job on our list, and it often pays for itself in a single winter.

Can you repair rodent damage to ducting?

Small holes can be patched, but where rodents have chewed through the insulation and inner liner we replace that run, because a patched liner keeps failing next to the patch. We also note where they are getting into the roof so you can get that closed off.

Do I need to be home?

Yes, we need access to the manhole and to every vent for the airflow check at the end. You do not need to go up there with us, we photograph everything and show you on the ground before and after.

How long does a duct repair take?

A single reconnection is usually inside an hour. Replacing one run takes one to two hours depending on roof access. A full house re-duct is a day. We will give you a realistic time when we quote, not an optimistic one.

Is it worth replacing ducting rather than repairing it?

If the ducting is over about fifteen years old and the material has gone brittle, yes. Repairs on brittle duct tend to fail again a foot away from the patch within a season or two. If it is a clean tear or a connection on ducting in good condition, repairing it is the sensible choice and we will say so.

Will new ducting lower my heating bill?

It usually does, sometimes noticeably, because you stop paying to heat your roof space. We will not put a percentage on it because it depends on how bad the leak was and how you use the system, and anyone quoting you a guaranteed saving is guessing.

Do you work on evaporative cooling ducts?

Yes. Evaporative cooling ductwork fails the same way and is often found disconnected when we are up there for a heating complaint. We check both systems while we have the manhole open.

Do you cover my suburb?

All of Melbourne metro plus Geelong and surrounds, seven days including public holidays. Call 0436 389 114 if you are not sure.
