Coastal Humidity Moves Carpet More Than You Think
Carpet backing absorbs moisture from the air and expands. Along the coast, where humidity swings harder and faster than inland, that movement is more pronounced, which is why so many Bellarine and Surf Coast homes ripple seasonally.
If a carpet was kick-stretched rather than power-stretched when it was laid, that seasonal movement is what finally pulls it loose. It is extremely common in the newer estates around Armstrong Creek, Curlewis and Waurn Ponds.
A proper power stretch takes the slack out across the full width and re-hooks it onto the gripper, so normal humidity movement no longer has anywhere to go.
If the waves are worse in summer and better in winter, that is humidity movement on a carpet that was never properly tensioned. It will not settle on its own, and it creases permanently if left.

Why do my carpets ripple every summer?
Coastal humidity swells the carpet backing, and if the carpet was only kick-stretched when laid there is nothing holding that expansion in check. It looks seasonal, but the underlying cause is tension, and a proper power stretch resolves it permanently.
Do you cover the Bellarine and Surf Coast for restretching?

Will it ripple again next summer?
Not if it is power-stretched properly. Seasonal rippling happens when a carpet was only kick-stretched at installation and humidity has somewhere to push it. Once the slack is taken out across the full width and the carpet is re-hooked to the gripper, normal humidity movement has nowhere to go.

Why did my carpet ripple in the first place?
Almost always because it was kick-stretched instead of power-stretched when it was laid, which is very common in project homes. Humidity, a damp subfloor and dragging heavy furniture are the other causes. We check which it is, because a damp subfloor will ripple the carpet again no matter how well we stretch it.
Will the ripples come back?
Not if it is power-stretched properly and the underlying cause is dealt with. A carpet that is simply kicked back into place usually ripples again within a year, which is why some people have had it done twice.
Do I need to move the furniture?
Clear small items and anything breakable. We move light furniture such as chairs, coffee tables and lounges ourselves. Very heavy items like wardrobes and pianos we work around.
How long does it take?
A standard bedroom is usually under an hour. A large living room takes one to two hours, and a whole three-bedroom house is generally a half day.
Can you stretch and clean in the same visit?
Yes, and it saves a call-out. We always stretch first and clean afterwards so the pile is groomed once the carpet is flat.
