Which stains actually come out?
Tannin stains like wine, coffee and tea usually respond well. Protein stains such as food, milk and vomit respond to enzyme treatment. Oil and grease need solvent pre-treatment but come out. What does not come out is bleach, heat and iron damage, and dye loss, because the colour has gone from the fibre rather than something sitting on it.
Should I try to treat it myself first?
Blot it, never rub, and use cold water rather than hot. Beyond that, be careful. Supermarket sprays leave a detergent residue that attracts soil back into the same spot, and heat sets wine, coffee and protein stains permanently. Previous scrubbing is the most common thing that turns a treatable mark into a permanent one.
Do you charge if the stain will not come out?
We tell you before we treat it. If we can see from the outset that a mark is dye loss or heat damage rather than soiling, we say so and you decide whether to proceed. We would rather lose a small job than take payment for a treatment that was never going to work.
