A Wipe Across the Front Is Not Cleaning a Venetian

Blinds are the thing everybody means to get to and nobody does. The dust builds evenly across every slat, so there is nothing to compare it against until you clean one and hold it next to the next window.

South Yarra is really two suburbs in one. There are the period terraces and townhouses in the streets off Domain Road, and there are the apartment towers of the Forrest Hill precinct behind Chapel Street. The cleaning problems in each are completely different.

Apartments here are compact, often with the living area, dining and study all on one continuous floor covering. That means soil concentrates rather than spreads, so a two-bedroom apartment can look worse than a whole house in the suburbs despite having a fraction of the area.

Tenancy turnover is high through South Yarra, which is why end-of-lease work is such a large part of what we do here. It also means a lot of the carpet we see has been cleaned repeatedly by whoever was cheapest, and detergent residue from those cleans is often the actual reason a floor re-soils within weeks.

Kitchen blinds are their own category. Airborne cooking grease settles on the slats and then traps dust into a film that ordinary cleaning smears rather than lifts. Those are the ones that sometimes need to come down for an ultrasonic clean rather than being done on the window.

Vertical blinds fail differently from venetians. The vanes collect dust along the leading edge, the weights and chain at the bottom gather grime, and the carrier track above jams with the same dust, which is why old verticals start dropping vanes long before the fabric itself has worn out.

Apartment access needs sorting before we arrive

Most South Yarra towers require a booked lift, a loading dock slot, and a certificate of currency lodged with building management before a contractor can start. My vertical blinds keep dropping vanes. Can you help?

Often yes. Vanes usually drop because the carrier track above has jammed with dust, not because the blind has failed. Cleaning the track and headrail is included, and in many cases the blind operates properly again afterwards without any parts being replaced.

Are blinds cheaper done with the curtains?

Considerably, because the call-out is charged once rather than twice. Most people with both do them in the same visit, and a whole home of up to ten blinds is from $220 bundled.

Do the blinds come off the window?

Usually not. Most blinds are cleaned in place, which avoids the risk of damaging brackets and mechanisms on removal. Heavily grease-soiled kitchen blinds sometimes come down for an ultrasonic deep clean from $40 each, and we will tell you if yours are in that category.

Can you clean timber blinds?

Yes, with a low-moisture method. Real timber and faux-timber warp, swell and lose their finish if they are over-wetted, which is what happens when they are treated like an aluminium venetian. They are from $35 each because they take longer and need more care.

Can you clean an apartment on a high floor?

Yes. We run hoses from the truck where the building allows it and use portable extraction where it does not, which covers the towers around Forrest Hill and Chapel Street. Tell us the floor and whether there is a service lift when you book so we bring the right setup.

Do you need a certificate of currency for my building?

Most South Yarra apartment buildings do require one from any contractor. We carry public liability insurance and can send the certificate through before the job. Sorting it when you book avoids being turned away at the loading dock.
