Nobody Cleans Their Curtains, and the Reason Is Always the Same

Taking curtains down is a two-person job with a ladder, and rehanging them straight afterwards is worse. So they hang there quietly filtering every bit of airborne dust in the house, year after year.

Vermont is sixties and seventies brick veneer on large, leafy blocks, with mature trees through most streets and a lot of original family homes that have only changed hands once or twice.

Long ownership is the local pattern, and it shows in the floor coverings. We see a lot of carpet in Vermont that has been down for decades and never had a professional clean, which is usually good news rather than bad, because older wool and wool-blend carpet responds extremely well to proper extraction.

Ducted heating is close to universal in this era of house, and much of that ductwork is original. If you get a dusty smell in the first cold week of the year, that is the ducts rather than the carpet, and it is worth dealing with before paying to clean the floor underneath.

Weight is the reason curtains hold so much. A single full-length lined drop can weigh several kilograms, and the fabric is effectively a vertical filter sitting in the path of every air current in the room. Dust does not fall off it, it works into the weave and stays there.

The heading tape at the top collects the worst of it, because that is where the fabric bunches into permanent folds. It is also the part nobody can see from inside the room, which is why curtains that look acceptable from the sofa are still releasing dust every time they are drawn.

Original ducts and the first cold snap

In houses of this age the ducted heating is often the same age as the house. Roof-space dust gets pushed into every room when the heater first starts for the season, then settles into the carpet you have just had cleaned. If that smell is familiar, get the ducts looked at in the same visit.

What You Get

What Is Included in a Curtain Clean

Cleaned on the rail in most cases, so your windows are never left bare.

Fabric and lining checkBlockout backing, interlining and loose weaves each behave differently under moisture.
Colourfastness testTested on a hidden section, because older dyes and sun-weakened fabric can bleed.
Dry soil and dust removalSpecialist vacuuming through the pleats and along the heading tape first.
On-rail steam cleaningCleaned in place where the fabric allows it, so nothing is taken down or sent away.
Odour treatmentCooking, smoke and pet odours held in the fabric are neutralised rather than perfumed over.
Controlled dryingAir movement so curtains dry hanging straight, without shrinkage or watermarking.
How It Works

How a Curtain Clean Runs on the Day

Most homes are finished in one to two hours.

1

Confirm the drops and the price

We count the drops with you and confirm an itemised quote before starting.

2

Identify fabric and lining

Blockout, interlined and delicate sheers each get a different approach.

3

Test for colourfastness

A hidden section first, because sun-weakened fabric can release dye.

4

Vacuum out the dust

Through the pleats and heading tape, where years of dust settles.

5

Clean on the rail

Steam cleaned in place where the fabric allows, keeping the hang intact.

6

Dry hanging straight

Air movement so they dry in shape, then we check each drop with you.

Questions

Curtain Cleaning Vermont Questions, Answered

Will they shrink?

Not when cleaned on the rail with controlled moisture and dried hanging. Shrinkage is overwhelmingly a problem with washing curtains or sending them away, where the fabric relaxes out of shape and then finishes short when rehung.

Can you clean blockout and lined curtains?

Yes, with a low-moisture method. Blockout backing is a coating that can watermark or separate if over-wetted, so it is treated differently from a plain lined curtain. We identify the backing before starting rather than after.

How long do they take to dry?

Usually two to three hours hanging, with air movement. You can close them normally the same evening.

Can you get cooking smells out of curtains?

Usually yes. Cooking residue is a greasy soil rather than dry dust, so it needs a different treatment, and the odour is held inside the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. We neutralise it rather than spraying fragrance over the top. Mention it when you book so we bring the right products.

Do you cover Vermont South, Mitcham and Nunawading?

Yes. Vermont, Vermont South, Mitcham, Nunawading, Forest Hill and Blackburn are all on the same eastern run.

Our carpet has been down 30 years. Is it too late?

Usually not. Older wool and wool-blend carpet from that era was made well and often responds better to extraction than modern budget synthetic. What cleaning cannot fix is fibre that has physically worn away in the traffic lanes. We will tell you which you have before you commit.
