Nobody Cleans Their Curtains, and the Reason Is Always the Same
Taking curtains down is a two-person job with a ladder, and rehanging them straight afterwards is worse. So they hang there quietly filtering every bit of airborne dust in the house, year after year.
Curlewis is a Bellarine growth pocket, mostly new estate housing built around the golf course, with young families and a lot of homes under fifteen years old.
Like all newer estates the issues are pale floor coverings, fine dust from ongoing construction, and open ground that has not yet been landscaped. It soils quickly and it shows every mark.
Being coastal Bellarine adds salt-laden air and sand, particularly for homes closer to Clifton Springs and the bay. Sand is abrasive and needs removing dry before any moisture goes near it.
Weight is the reason curtains hold so much. A single full-length lined drop can weigh several kilograms, and the fabric is effectively a vertical filter sitting in the path of every air current in the room. Dust does not fall off it, it works into the weave and stays there.
The heading tape at the top collects the worst of it, because that is where the fabric bunches into permanent folds. It is also the part nobody can see from inside the room, which is why curtains that look acceptable from the sofa are still releasing dust every time they are drawn.
Curlewis is on our Bellarine run alongside Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Leopold and Ocean Grove. That means a local crew with realistic arrival times rather than a two-hour window while somebody drives down the highway from Melbourne.

Identify fabric and lining
Blockout, interlined and delicate sheers each get a different approach.
Test for colourfastness
A hidden section first, because sun-weakened fabric can release dye.
Vacuum out the dust
Through the pleats and heading tape, where years of dust settles.
Clean on the rail
Steam cleaned in place where the fabric allows, keeping the hang intact.
Dry hanging straight
Air movement so they dry in shape, then we check each drop with you.

Curtain Cleaning Curlewis Questions, Answered
Can you get cooking smells out of curtains?
Usually yes. Cooking residue is a greasy soil rather than dry dust, so it needs a different treatment, and the odour is held inside the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. We neutralise it rather than spraying fragrance over the top. Mention it when you book so we bring the right products.
What about mould spots along the hem?
Cleaning removes surface growth and the soil around it, but mould that has been there long enough to stain the fibre often leaves a shadow behind. We test a hidden area and give you an honest expectation before starting rather than afterwards.
Do the curtains have to come down?
In most cases no. We clean on the rail, which keeps the hang and hem line intact and means you never have bare windows. Take down and rehang is available from $15 a drop for the minority of fabrics that genuinely need off-site treatment.
Will they shrink?
Not when cleaned on the rail with controlled moisture and dried hanging. Shrinkage is overwhelmingly a problem with washing curtains or sending them away, where the fabric relaxes out of shape and then finishes short when rehung.
Do you cover Drysdale, Ocean Grove and Portarlington?
Yes. Curlewis, Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Leopold, Portarlington and Ocean Grove are all on our Bellarine run, worked by the Geelong team rather than a van from Melbourne.
Does living near the coast change anything?
Sand does. It is angular and abrasive, and it cuts carpet fibre from underneath every time somebody walks on it. It has to come out dry with a thorough pre-vacuum before any moisture, because wetting sand first turns it into paste in the backing.
