Nobody Cleans Their Curtains, and the Reason Is Always the Same

Taking curtains down is a two-person job with a ladder, and rehanging them straight afterwards is worse. So they hang there quietly filtering every bit of airborne dust in the house, year after year.

South Yarra is really two suburbs in one. There are the period terraces and townhouses in the streets off Domain Road, and there are the apartment towers of the Forrest Hill precinct behind Chapel Street. The cleaning problems in each are completely different.

Tenancy turnover is high through South Yarra, which is why end-of-lease work is such a large part of what we do here. It also means a lot of the carpet we see has been cleaned repeatedly by whoever was cheapest, and detergent residue from those cleans is often the actual reason a floor re-soils within weeks.

Apartments here are compact, often with the living area, dining and study all on one continuous floor covering. That means soil concentrates rather than spreads, so a two-bedroom apartment can look worse than a whole house in the suburbs despite having a fraction of the area.

Weight is the reason curtains hold so much. A single full-length lined drop can weigh several kilograms, and the fabric is effectively a vertical filter sitting in the path of every air current in the room. Dust does not fall off it, it works into the weave and stays there.

The heading tape at the top collects the worst of it, because that is where the fabric bunches into permanent folds. It is also the part nobody can see from inside the room, which is why curtains that look acceptable from the sofa are still releasing dust every time they are drawn.
