A Wipe Across the Front Is Not Cleaning a Venetian

Blinds are the thing everybody means to get to and nobody does. The dust builds evenly across every slat, so there is nothing to compare it against until you clean one and hold it next to the next window.

Brighton runs from the bay back through wide streets of Victorian and Edwardian homes, interspersed with substantial modern rebuilds. Large houses, quality floor coverings, and the beach at the end of the road.

Sand is the local signature. It comes in on feet, towels and dogs, and it is far more damaging than ordinary household dust because the grains are hard and angular. Sand works down to the base of the pile and cuts the fibre from underneath every time somebody walks on it.

Vertical blinds fail differently from venetians. The vanes collect dust along the leading edge, the weights and chain at the bottom gather grime, and the carrier track above jams with the same dust, which is why old verticals start dropping vanes long before the fabric itself has worn out.

The part that matters is the edges. Running a cloth across the face of a venetian moves dust from the middle of each slat and leaves a dark line along both edges, which is why home-cleaned blinds still look grey. Slat by slat, both faces and the edges, is the only method that actually works.
