A Good Rug and a Cheap Rug Are Not the Same Job

Fibre and dye decide everything about how a rug should be cleaned, and getting it wrong is how genuinely valuable rugs are ruined. Wool, silk, viscose and synthetic each behave completely differently under water.

Richmond is single-fronted Victorian cottages, terraces and converted warehouses, packed tightly between Bridge Road, Swan Street and Church Street. Narrow, deep floor plans and very little off-street parking.

A lot of Richmond carpet is laid straight over the original hardwood boards with minimal underlay. That changes how much moisture is safe to use, so we run drier and put more air movement in rather than saturating a floor that has nowhere to drain.

The narrow plan concentrates traffic. In a single-fronted cottage every person walks the same hallway line from the front door to the kitchen, so the wear pattern is sharper here than in a wide suburban house. Traffic-lane greying is the number one thing we are called about in Richmond.

Rugs take more punishment than fixed carpet, because they sit exactly where people walk and then get shifted, rolled, vacuumed aggressively and occasionally moved between rooms. The foundation takes that strain and the fringes take the worst of it.

Can you get pet accidents out of a wool rug?

How often should a rug be cleaned?

Every 12 to 24 months for a rug in a living area, longer for one in a low-traffic room. What matters more than the interval is vacuuming both sides regularly, because it is the dry grit in the foundation that actually wears a rug out.

How do I know if my rug is viscose?

Viscose is sold as art silk, faux silk, bamboo silk or rayon. It has a bright sheen, feels cool and slightly slippery, and it darkens and stiffens where water touches it. Do not test it yourself with water. Send us a photo and tell us what the label says, because getting this wrong is how expensive rugs are ruined.

Can you clean a Persian or hand-knotted rug?

Yes, with dye testing first. Older natural and early synthetic dyes can bleed, and once a red has run into an ivory field it cannot be reversed. We test a hidden corner before any moisture reaches the visible surface, and if the dye is unstable we tell you and discuss the options rather than proceeding and hoping.

Will you be able to park in my street?

Usually, though Richmond’s permit-only zones are the tightest we work in. Truck-mounted extraction needs the van within hose reach of the door. If you have a visitor permit or rear lane access, tell us when booking. Where parking genuinely is not possible we bring portable equipment instead.
